Anselmo Mendes is one of the most important creators of modern Portuguese white wines, having dedicated over 30 years to working with indigenous Portuguese grape varieties. He is especially renowned for Alvarinho and is often referred to as "Senhor Alvarinho" – "Mr. Alvarinho." Mendes was instrumental in helping to restore the reputation of the Monção e Melgaço region and demonstrating that Vinho Verde can be not only a light, simple summer wine but also a complex, textured, and age-worthy wine. The vineyards are cultivated with respect for the local terroir, and the producer places great emphasis on authenticity, soil preservation, and a more sustainable approach to viticulture. Contacto is made from Alvarinho grapes grown in low-lying plots near the river with granite, alluvial, and river terrace soils – precisely what gives the wine its texture, minerality, and characteristic subtle bitterness.
