Anselmo Mendes is one of the most important contemporary Portuguese white wine producers, whose name has practically become synonymous with Alvarinho and the Monção e Melgaço region. He was born and raised in Monção and started working with Alvarinho in 1998. Today, his winery is not only a production facility but also a space for experiments and research, combining traditional methods with modern winemaking. Mendes focuses heavily on expressing local grape varieties and terroir, and his vineyard work employs more sustainable and traditional farming principles. Expressões is one of the best examples of his approach: the Alvarinho from the granite terroir of Monção and Melgaço is presented here not as a simple refreshing Vinho Verde, but as a serious, textured white wine capable of aging. Monção e Melgaço is considered the historical center of Alvarinho, and its granite soils impart characteristic minerality and tension to the wine.
