The 2022 growing season in the Tejo region was hot and dry, resulting in smaller but more concentrated yields. These conditions resulted in stronger tannins and a deeper aromatic profile, especially in the red wines.
This wine has a strong aroma of cherries, plums and blackberries, with subtle spices such as black pepper and dried herbs. Touriga Nacional adds depth and florality, Castelão adds structure and Trincadeira adds a soft tannic texture. Balanced yet young - suitable to enjoy now or to keep for a few more years.
About the manufacturer
Casal da Coelheira is a family-run farm founded in 1986 in the village of Tramagal, in a bend of the Tagus River, north of Lisbon. The name, meaning “place where hares are born”, comes from the abundance of wild animals that still thrive in this part of the landscape. The farm consists of around 64 hectares of vineyards spread over sandy chernet soils, shaped by temperate climate conditions of hot, long summers and cold, wet winters. This environment requires hardy vines with less foliage, but allows for the production of intensely fruitful berries with excellent concentration.
Terroir, varieties and wine style. Casal da Coelheira cultivates both traditional Portuguese varieties—Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Fernão Pires, Arinto—but also selected international variants, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or Alicante Bouschet, adapted to the local soil and climate.
