Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino is one of the most recognizable and legendary wines from Argentina, an icon for its history, quality and unique vision. The label of this wine is a visual poem about the life of the Malbec grape. It depicts four women, each symbolizing one of the most important stages of the Malbec era. The first is Eleanor of Aquitaine, who represents the birth of Malbec in Europe, when this grape was still known as “Côt”. The second is Migrant, who embodies the journey of Europeans to the New World, when Malbec was brought to Argentina. The third is Madame Phylloxera, reflecting the devastating phylloxera crisis that destroyed most of the vineyards in Europe. The fourth figure is Adrianna Catena, who symbolizes the rebirth of Malbec in Argentina and the role of the Catena family in bringing this grape to the world stage. The label is designed as a work of art that tells the story of ten centuries of grape history, struggle and triumph.

This wine is special because it is made from old, deep-rooted Malbec vines growing in the Catena family’s high-altitude vineyards – Angélica and Nicasia. These vines have retained their genetic heritage from the pre-phylloxera era, which is why their berries are characterized by an extremely bright, deep and concentrated character. The Catena family is based on the philosophy of high-altitude terroir, in which altitude gives the wine freshness, structure and natural elegance. Malbec Argentino is aged in French oak barrels, maintaining harmony between the intensity of the fruit and the refined, subtle spice. It is precisely because of its history, symbolism, artistic label and impeccable quality that this wine has earned the status of “fucking iconic” – it is a bottle that combines culture, art and world-class winemaking.

About the manufacturer

The history of Catena Zapata began in 1902, when Nicola Catena arrived in Argentina from Italy and planted his first vines in Mendoza. The family believed from the beginning that altitude was their greatest asset, so they began to develop vineyards higher and higher on the slopes of the Andes. This philosophy fundamentally changed Argentine winemaking - the Catenas were the first to realize that extreme altitude gives wines not only freshness, but also a unique aromatic profile. Among their most famous vineyards are Adrianna and Domingo - high-altitude plots, now considered among the best in the entire American continent.
The Catena family places great emphasis on old vine lines and genetic heritage, especially after the phylloxera crisis. Although Argentina was one of the few countries not severely affected by phylloxera due to its dry soils and high altitude conditions, Catena still researched phylloxera-resistant rootstocks, clones and historical adaptations of vines. This heritage became part of their “Historic Rows” philosophy – to maintain the genetic continuity of old vines and create wines that reflect their natural, pre-phylloxera character. The producers’ motto – science, tradition and the highest expression respectful of the terroir – allows them to create wines that are deep, elegant and extremely well-maintained.
