The 2018 harvest in the Montepulciano region was very favorable and exceptional, with exceptionally good climatic conditions. The spring was warm and sunny, and the summer was dry, with plenty of sunshine and heat, which ideally encouraged the ripening of the grapes. These conditions allowed the grapes to develop evenly and accumulate intense aromas and sugar levels. This wine has an intense ruby color, which acquires garnet hues with age. The aroma is dominated by notes of red fruit, spices, leather and tobacco. On the palate, it is dry, harmonious, with firm tannins and a long-lasting aftertaste. Due to its structure and acidity, it is excellent for long aging, and can improve in the bottle for 10-20 years or even longer.

About the manufacturer

Contucci is one of the oldest and most consistently operating winemaking families in the heart of Montepulciano. Having started growing grapes as early as the 11th century and having actively contributed to the formation of the reputation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in the 18th century, this family is still one of the most important guardians of the region's traditions. The wines are aged in authentic 13th century cellars, whose aura is filled with history, and next to them stands the magnificent Baroque Palazzo Contucci - designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder and frescoed by Andrea Pozzo in 1701-1703. It is not only a wine house, but also a living testimony to culture and heritage, where the history, art and winemaking skills of Montepulciano are intertwined.
The family-owned farm covers around 170 hectares, where the main varieties grown are local varieties: Prugnolo Gentile (a clone of Sangiovese), Canaiolo Nero and Colorino. All wines are fermented in large stainless steel and concrete tanks and then aged in massive French and Slavonian oak botti barrels, which have been in use for around 15 years. The limited use of new oak allows the elegance and tradition of the terroir to shine through. The wines are often released to the market later than the regulations allow, as the family prioritizes quality and authenticity over market dictates. This philosophy has earned the Contucci name respect among critics, who appreciate their wines for their classic style, subtle elegance and harmonious maturity.
