  • Piedmont Italy
  • 100% Chardonnay
  • White dry wine, aged in oak barrels
  • 13.5%

One of Italy's most iconic white wines, it has become a benchmark not only in Piedmont but throughout the country. The aroma reveals white peaches, ripe apples, citrus zest, white flowers, and acacia blossoms, complemented by notes of toasted hazelnuts, butter, vanilla, and subtle minerality. The taste is rich, concentrated, and has a silky texture, yet maintains exceptional freshness and elegance. A long, precise finish and well-integrated oak allow this wine to age successfully for over a decade.

Gaia & Rey was the first Chardonnay wine in Piedmont and the first Italian white wine to be aged in French oak barriques. Its first vintage appeared in 1983 and immediately changed perceptions of Italian white wines. The name is dedicated to Angelo Gaja's daughter Gaia and his grandmother Clotilde Rey, and the wine is still considered one of the most prestigious examples of Chardonnay in Europe – elegant, long-lived, and accurately reflecting Gaja's ambition to create world-class wines.

About the manufacturer

Gaja is one of the world's most influential wineries, founded in 1859 in the town of Barbaresco. Its true international recognition was earned by Angelo Gaja, a fourth-generation representative, often called the man who changed the history of Italian winemaking. He was the first in Piedmont to apply meticulous selection of individual vineyards, reduce yields, introduce modern winemaking technologies, and demonstrate that Italian wines can compete with the best names from Burgundy and Bordeaux.
Today, the fifth generation of the family leads the Gaja winery – Gaia Gaja, together with her siblings Rossana and Giovanni Gaja, while Angelo Gaja remains actively involved in shaping the winery's philosophy and strategy. Although the official title of chief winemaker is not emphasized, winemaking was led for many years by one of Italy's most respected oenologists, Guido Rivella, who worked alongside Angelo Gaja for over four decades and helped create many legendary Gaja wines. Today, decisions are made collaboratively by the family and a long-standing technical team.
