Mackmyra Distillery was founded in 1999 and is considered Sweden's first modern whisky distillery. It essentially started the history of Swedish single malt whisky, based on the idea of creating whisky exclusively from local raw materials – Swedish barley, water, and carefully selected casks. The distillery stands out for its innovative, energy-efficient distillation technologies and continuous experimentation with different casks and local Swedish oak. Stjärnrök (Swedish for "Star Smoke") was first introduced in 2021 as a limited edition whisky, inspired by the dark autumn and winter evenings of Scandinavia. Due to its great success, it became a permanent part of Mackmyra's range. Unlike traditional Scottish smoky whiskies, Stjärnrök boasts a distinctive Swedish character – part of the malt is dried not only with peat but also with juniper twigs, giving the whisky unique herbal, forest, and spice notes, which have become one of Mackmyra's hallmarks.
