A deep, concentrated and extremely complex Grüner Veltliner, characterized by a ripe, yet still vibrant character. The aroma reveals yellow stone fruit, dried apricots, orange peel, light honey, wax, herbs, white pepper, and flinty minerality. The taste is rich and textured, yet maintains a bright acidity and elegant tension. The long finish presents notes of salinity, pleasant bitterness, herbs, and stone. The 2019 vintage is characterized by high concentration and excellent balance, and Nikolaihof's decision to age the wine in wood for several years before release adds additional complexity.

About the manufacturer
Nikolaihof is one of Austria's most historic wineries, located in the village of Mautern in the Wachau region. The winery's history dates back to Roman times – 63 AD, and the Saahs family has owned Nikolaihof since 1894. It is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most important pioneers of biodynamic winemaking in Austria: the winery transitioned to biodynamic farming in 1971 and today operates according to Demeter principles.
Nikolaihof's philosophy is fundamentally based on patience and minimal intervention. Wines are often spontaneously fermented and aged for a long time in large, old wooden barrels. Here, the focus is not on quick fruitiness or modern techniques, but on time, vineyard character, and the natural evolution of the wine. Ried Im Weingebirge is an approximately six-hectare vineyard area located above Mautern, on loamy and loess topsoil with a deeper paragneiss base. This is one of Nikolaihof's most important vineyards, and Smaragd is the highest traditional Wachau quality category.
