The wine's aroma reveals a deep, yet youthful and intense wave of dark fruits – black cherries, blackberries, plums, and blackcurrants form the base, complemented by nuances of cocoa, dark chocolate, licorice, violet blossoms, and delicate spices. On the palate, it is dense, structured, and very concentrated, with a powerful yet elegant tannin framework that gives the wine potential for longevity. The natural residual sweetness is rich, yet balanced by a bright acidity, keeping the wine lively and not overwhelming. Dark fruits, chocolate, and spices dominate the flavor, and the finish is long, warm, and multilayered, with a mineral, slightly graphite undertone.
About the manufacturer
Quinta do Castro is a classic Douro Valley winery, located in one of Europe's most dramatic wine landscapes – the Douro Valley. This area is characterized by steep, terraced slopes above the Douro River, where grapes grow in poor schist soils, giving the wines intensity, structure, and a mineral backbone.
Quinta do Castro's philosophy is based on the traditional culture of Port production: grapes are hand-picked, fermentation often takes place in old granite "lagares" (open tanks) where the grapes are trodden in the traditional manner, and fermentation is then stopped by adding grape spirit (aguardente), preserving the natural fruit sweetness. This is a method that has shaped the identity of Port wine over centuries – a strong, concentrated, and long-aging wine.
