The aromas burst forth with a rich array of dark berries – ripe plums, blackcurrants, and red stone fruit, accompanied by subtle floral notes and earthy spices – graphite, smoke, and a hint of herbs. On the palate, the wine has a distinctively clean yet full body with vibrant fruit concentration and energy, while the acidity provides vitality and a sense of tension. The tannins are firm but refined, lending structure and elegance, and the oak gently integrates through cedar and spice nuances that complement the fruit profile. The finish is medium-long, clean, and harmonious, with a clear Merlot character and an elegant aftertaste where hints of red and dark berries linger.

About the manufacturer
Shannon Vineyards is located in the cool-climate Elgin Valley region, which is today considered one of South Africa's most prestigious terroirs, particularly for elegant, structured wines. The farm was established in 1998 by British-born businessman Stuart Downes, who believed that Elgin's altitude, cool nights, and long growing season allowed for the cultivation of concentrated grapes that maintained acidity and balance. Shannon has become iconic for its focused work with Merlot – a varietal not always considered prestigious in South Africa, but here it has gained depth, structure, and longevity. The winery's philosophy is based on precise vineyard management and restrained, structure-supporting oak aging. James Downes is currently responsible for the wines' style and quality, continuing the family's vision to create elegant, mineral-driven, and clearly structured Elgin wines that stand out for their subtle power and aging potential.
